Islamic world painters praised at biennial

TEHRAN, Dec. 27 (MNA) -- The winners of the 2006 Painting Biennial of the Islamic World were honored during a ceremony at Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMCA) on Tuesday.

Iranian calligraphy-painting old hand Mansureh Hosseini was named the recipient of the plaque of constant membership of Iran’s Academy of Arts.

The self-deprecating Hosseini said, “I cannot utter anything important before luminaries. I don’t deserve such an honor and believe that the art of the painters of the Islamic world is sublime.”

The ceremony continued with the presentation of awards by the jury comprising Mohammad-Ali Taraqqijah, Habibollah Sadeqi, and Mehdi Hosseini along with three other judges from Morocco, Tunisia, and Republic of Azerbaijan.

The selections were made in view of creativity, self-expression, sensitivity toward time and place, attention to cultural climate, and a new approach to the form of image.

Mohammad Morshedlu, Behnush Kazemi, Amir Rad, Shantiya Zaker-Ameli, Hessam Tabatabaii received the Secretary Award of the biennial.

The jury also awarded artists Karim Kharbawi (Morocco), Samuel Coleman Dolo (Ghana), Issa Majid al-Qalam (Qatar), Nizar Sabour (Syria), Reyhan Abbasi-Oglu (Turkey) Muhammad Al-Ameri (Jordan), Nazim Baykishiev (Republic of Azeriajan), and (Farrukh Nematzadeh (Tajikistan).

The 4th International Painting Biennial of the Islamic World was held from Nov. 9 to Dec. 11 at Tehran’s Saba Art and Culture Complex.

Organized by the academy, the biennial aimed to promote cultural relations and exchanges of contemporary art-related experiences among painters across the Islamic world, to appreciate the pictorial experiences of young painters in Islamic societies, and to examine and emphasize the fundamentals of the spiritual identity of Islamic art in the contemporary works.

Of 10,000 paintings, 1,000 were showcased during the 25-day event.
